Donington Park is situated near the village of Castle Donington in Leicestershire and was opened for motorcycle racing in March 1933 and was the scene of some of the legendary Mercedes versus Auto Union battles in 1937-38. During the war years it was used as a stores by the army and it gradually fell into disuse until it was bought in the 1970's by Tom Wheatcroft whose avowed intention was to stage the British GP there. Numerous International races have been staged there for F2, F3 and F3000 cars as well as Sports cars and the British GP for motorbikes. Eventually Tom Wheatcroft's dream came true when the European GP was held there in 1993 when an inspired Ayrton Senna in a McLaren lead home Damon Hill's Williams.
