These days Mallory Park has rather fallen in the shadow of its Leicestershire neighbour Donington Park but in its heyday it was the venue for all classes of racing up to Formula 1. Situated near the village of Kirkby Mallory it was originally a pony-trotting track until it was converted to a motorcycle grass track. A tarmac surface was laid in 1956 and car and motorcycle racing became new and popular additions to the circuit. Always a favourite venue with spectators due to its good viewing, its greatest moment was in 1962 when the 2000 Guineas Formula 1 race was held there. Despite never reaching these heights again several International Formula 2 and Formula 5000 races were held there in the 1970s. In 1979 a piece of track was added cutting out Shaw's Corner, forming what is known as the Oval Circuit.
